What causes condensation on windows?
Condensation on windows occurs when warm, moisture-filled air comes into contact with a surface that is cold enough for the water vapor in the air to turn into liquid droplets. It is most common during colder weather, but it can also occur in warm, humid conditions when indoor air meets a relatively cool surface.
Why does condensation form?
Air naturally contains some water vapor. Warm air can generally hold more moisture than cold air. When humid indoor air reaches a cold window, the air immediately next to the glass cools.
If it cools below its dew point, the excess moisture turns into tiny water droplets on the glass. This is the familiar foggy or wet appearance of a condensed window.

Condensation between window panes is different
If moisture appears between the panes of a double- or triple-glazed window, rather than on the room-facing surface, it can indicate that the sealed insulating unit has failed.
This is different from ordinary indoor condensation and may require assessment or replacement of the affected glazing unit.
How can window condensation be reduced?
The most effective approach is to control both indoor humidity and the temperature of the window surface.
Try these measures:
- Improve ventilation, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
- Use extractor or exhaust fans when cooking or showering.
- Avoid drying large amounts of wet clothing indoors when possible.
- Keep curtains and blinds positioned so that some air can circulate near the glass.

- Improve window insulation if condensation is persistent.
- Wipe away excess water when necessary to prevent prolonged dampness around frames and sills.
A dehumidifier can also help reduce indoor moisture when ventilation alone is not sufficient.
When should condensation be a concern?
Occasional condensation on cold windows is not necessarily a serious problem. However, persistent or heavy condensation can contribute to damp surfaces, mold growth, damaged window frames, and peeling finishes if the moisture is left untreated.
If condensation continues despite reasonable ventilation and humidity control, it is worth checking for inadequate insulation, hidden moisture sources, or problems with the windows themselves.
