Which materials make a home more soundproof?

The most effective soundproofing usually comes from a combination of mass, insulation, airtight construction, and separation between surfaces. No single material can block every type of noise, so the right solution depends on whether you are dealing with voices, traffic, music, footsteps, or noise coming through doors and windows.

1. Dense drywall or plasterboard

Adding dense layers of drywall to walls and ceilings can increase their ability to block airborne sound. Using multiple layers with properly sealed joints is generally more effective than relying on a single thin layer.

Special acoustic drywall products can also be used where additional sound isolation is needed.

2. Mineral wool or fiberglass insulation

Mineral wool and fiberglass can be installed inside wall and ceiling cavities. They help absorb sound energy inside the cavity and reduce the amount that passes through the structure.

These materials work best as part of a properly constructed wall or ceiling rather than simply being placed against an existing surface.
