What makes a home truly energy efficient?

A truly energy-efficient home uses less energy to provide the same level of comfort, lighting, hot water, and everyday services. It is not simply a home filled with efficient appliances. Good insulation, airtight construction, efficient heating and cooling, sensible lighting, and careful energy use all work together.

1. A well-insulated building envelope

Insulation in the roof, walls, and floors slows the movement of heat between the inside and outside. In cold weather, this helps keep warmth indoors, while in hot weather it can reduce unwanted heat entering the home.

The quality and continuity of the insulation matter just as much as the amount installed.
