Tire slip affects acceleration and braking because the tire’s ability to transfer force to the road depends on the amount of grip between the rubber and the pavement.

During acceleration, the driven wheels can spin faster than the vehicle is actually moving. A small amount of slip can help produce strong traction, but excessive wheelspin reduces usable grip and wastes engine power, causing slower acceleration.

During braking, the opposite happens: the wheels can rotate slower than the vehicle’s actual speed. If they lock up completely, the tires slide across the road instead of maintaining controlled rolling contact. This generally reduces braking effectiveness and, importantly, makes steering control much harder.

The key point is that tires produce their maximum usable longitudinal force with some slip, not necessarily with zero slip. Modern ABS and traction-control systems constantly adjust braking or engine torque to keep slip near an effective range.

In simple terms: too little slip may limit force transfer, while too much slip causes the tire to slide and lose effective grip.
